New Life

One of my pet peeves when I was pregnant was having strangers rub or touch my belly.  I remember once  we were at a fast food restaurant placing our order and the girl behind the counter just reached over and started rubbing my pregnant belly.  I jumped back a bit alarmed.  I was always happy to let Hubby sit for hours on end rubbing my belly, talking to it, or just waiting for some sort of movement.  I can remember letting several different family members or close friends engage in this same belly activity, but not strangers.

I recently observed a pregnant friend struggle with this awkward moment as well. We were in conversation at a get together when another woman we both knew walked up and put both her hands on the pregnant woman’s belly and then proceeded to move her hands all around for several minutes.  I could tell my newly pregnant friend (only just starting to show) was taken back.  She moved backward slightly, but was unsure how to handle the situation. She knew the woman, but you could tell she was still uncomfortable with the sudden familiar contact.

There must be something about expectant mothers that make people want to touch them.  People are fascinated. Perhaps it is the cuteness of the bulging belly, perhaps for women its a bonding process of a shared circumstance or maybe it is something deeper.  Maybe the draw is the fact that she carries a whole other life inside her – a new life. There is just something exciting about feeling the baby kick, feeling the new life move and come alive.  Some people are just drawn to it.

I know you are really going to question my thought process here, but remembering how awkward it was for me to have strangers touching or trying to touch my belly made me think of Jesus. (I know your wondering how my mind got from point A to point B, but hang with me).

While here on earth Jesus was constantly being thronged.  Large crowds gathered around him, pressing in just trying to see Him, hear Him, and touch Him.  Sick, dying, diseased people trying to touch Him in a culture where the unclean shouted in the streets so you could avoid contact with them.  In some cases, they just wanted to touch His clothes (Matt 9:20, Matt 14:36).

Strangers wanting to touch Him. Why? What was the draw? They wanted healing, new beginnings and new life. He embodied new life. Abundant life!

John 10:9-10 (NKJV)

I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.  The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

I liked touching your belly when you were pregnant. It's the excitement of new life. We all want to share the feeling of the baby moving. But I would not want to touch a strangers belly. We all want to be conected to new life.

Hi Theresa,
I am sorry it has been so long since I stopped by. I enjoyed my visit, I can remember people touching my belly all the time when I was pregnant, it was a bit akward sometimes. I like the comparison it really makes you think, can you imagine being closed in by people all trying to touch you. So sorry to hear about the boy from your old neighborhood ! I love the picture collage, and all the other pictures. Thank's for sharing...
Take care,
Robin

I'm glad you are blogging again. :)
I wasn't ever a fan of strangers touching my belly, but I think I tend to exude coldness, so it didn't happen often. ;)
I like your comparison though. :-D

hhmmmm it takes a certain kinda of person who wants to feel life.....a person who loves outwardly....the kind of people that greet you with a hug and rub your back and genuinely care......I gotta say Theresa those kind of people I love to meet! and Jacque that is is a great experiment!

I recall with a sense of joy and wonder when my belly was filled with new life. I was never bothered by people feeling a kick or movement, but I don't believe I ever had the experience of a stranger reaching out. Seems rather shocking.
Here's something funny. Someone once told me (and I agree) that a similar feeling of the baby moving around is to run your tongue across the inside of your cheek. The sensation from the inside, and also if you place your hand on the outside of your cheek, is incredibly familiar. Of course, it has been nearly 30 years since I felt it, but I still remember. :)

Wonderful spiritual comparison, Theresa.

I have had four children and each time it was the same....it didn't bother me too much for people I knew to touch my belly but like you strangers was another thing. I make it a point to ask before doing so myself, but only women I know well...even my daughter-in-law. Most said yes...I think like you say it is a life growing inside that draws us...for some mothers it might be the memory....I still remember the feeling of my children moving inside...and I think for some women I have known who could not bear children wanted to feel some sensation of what it must be like. I love the way you compared the two...I had not thought of it in this light...you could add that others are drawn to those who walk in Christ because they have the Holy Spirit, alive in Christ....you could probably go for a long time with this lesson!!!
Grace to you

I too like the comparison. I do however, think it is rude to touch a pregnant woman in such a familiar way.
