    Cemetery Visit

Today as one of my mother’s belated birthday presents, I took her to a living history tour of the Nashville City Cemetery  It is the oldest existing public cemetery in Davidson County, Tennessee.  It opened in January of 1822 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.  It was one of the earliest integrated cemeteries in the United States and was a public cemetery where people of different races, religions and economic status could be buried.

Today we visited the graves of some of Nashville's famous historic citizens buried there.  Actors dressed in period costumes told their stories.  It was a great tour and I recommend all you Nashvillians who read my blog go next year (September 26, 2009 from 3pm to 6pm).  There has been a large preservation effort taking place at the cemetery and many graves and vaults have been cleaned, repaired and restored.

Richard Fulton, Mayor of Nashville from 1975 to 1987 and a strong supporter the Nashville City Cemetery, was a special guest and somehow we were honored to be in the same tour group with him.

We visited the graves of these former citizens:

John Kane (Portrayed by David McGinnis) – a Philadelphia stonecutter who worked for architect William Strickland during the building of the Tennessee State Capital.  His monument was designed by Strickland and the stone is from the same quarry of that of the state capital and the top shows the tools of the stonecutter trade.

Dr. Samuel Hogg  (Portrayed by Steve Caviness) – a Tennessee Congressman and a doctor serving with Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812 and later Rachel Jackson’s  physician who was at her side when she passed away.

    Nashville Cemetery 051

Mayor Ben West (Portrayed by Ben West, Jr,) – Mayor of Nashville from 1951-1963.  He spoke out for civil rights and was responsible for the city’s funding of the 1959 City Cemetery restoration.

Okay, silly me…not realizing that Ben West was portrayed by his son, as we were walking to the next gravesite, I commented that they did a good job finding someone who looked and sounded like Ben West.  LOL!

Captain William Driver (Portrayed by Matthew D. Coram)  -A sea captain who sailed around the world twice and gave the flag of the United States its nickname, “Old Glory”.

Nashville Cemetery 030        Nashville Cemetery 033        Nashville Cemetery 035

Laura Turpin (Portrayed by Jan Wallace) – Mother of White Turpin, she erected a monument to her son, a confederate solider from Mississippi who was killed from injuries during the Battle of Nashville His grave is inscribed with a scripture verse from

1 Samuel 20:18 “You will be missed, because your seat will be empty.”

    Nashville Cemetery 038

Mabel Lewis Imes – (Portrayed By Debra Tiller) - one of the original Fisk University Jubilee Singers.  The daughter of a slave and a French slaveholder.  Raised and musically trained in the North. The MET Choir was there singing with her.  It was beautiful!

Nashville Cemetery 040             Nashville Cemetery 041

Dr. Gerald Troost (Portrayed by John Michnya) -Tennessee’s best known antebellum scientist with pioneering works in the field of botany, zoology, and archaeology.

    Nashville Cemetery 045

Ann Robertson Johnston Cockrill  (Portrayed by Melissa Saddler)– sister of James Robertson, she came to Nashville by flatboat with the John Donelson party and taught school on the 16th month journey.  She actually had to drive one of the flatboats part of the way and was awarded one of the first land grants to a woman.

Sounds of the dulcimer filled the cemetery as we left.

    Attention to Detail

I forgot how much I enjoyed painting.  There is something very soothing about it. If I had any artistic talent, I would paint pictures, but I don’t, so I spent the better part of today at the old house painting walls.  I “cut in” the rooms that my Hubby had already rolled. I did the detail and trim work.   The edging and feathering.  Do I sound like I know what I’m talking about? My Hubby always laughs at me when he hears me use terms that he only told me a second before. Secretly, he is impressed when I use the “professional” lingo correctly. J

This may sound peculiar, but I really enjoyed the tediousness of the detail work. There is a great sense of satisfaction in the detail work. It was enjoyable to stand back and look at the freshly painted room.  Knowing that my little part made a big difference. Perhaps part of the satisfaction had to do with the teamwork of husband and wife.  It is nice when we complete a project or job together and we can see the results right before our eyes.  We use teamwork with the children, but we don’t always see the results right away.  My mother in law kept the kids, so it was a nice morning of just the two of us working to accomplish our dreams.

I’ve been thinking a lot about details lately.  One of the discussion questions for my ladies Bible study this week asks us to focus on all the details in the rescue of Moses as a baby.  Of course, the Bible is full of true story after true story of miraculous things done by God and if you look close you will see all the little details that had to fall into place.  It was no coincidence.  God was and is in control of all the little things that really aren’t so little after all.

I don’t know why, but I am still surprised at all details that God pays attention too.  Nothing is beneath His notice.  Nobody is beneath His notice. When we moved to this new house each boy got his own room.  They had previously shared a dresser, but now I needed another one.  God provided a free one before I even asked; a little thing to you maybe, but important to me.  This past week, I watched as two electric bills rolled in - a bit nerve racking. But, I also watched in amazement as two new accounts rolled in and a possible landscaping job.

Praise God for all the “little” details He takes care of in my everyday life.  Many of them, shamefully, go unnoticed or unacknowledged.  Nothing is too big or too small for the great I AM.  After all that He has done for me, after all the detail "painting" He has done; I pray that one day He will stand back and look at His “room” and say, “Well done, my good servant…” (Luke 19:17)

    Psalm 9:1-2 (NIV)

     I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart;
I will tell of all your wonders.

     I will be glad and rejoice in you;
I will sing praise to your name, O Most High

    I love you too - A Poem

    I love you too

    By: Theresa Richardson

Say it like you mean it

    You calmly utter.

    Is true love fading

Because my heart no longer flutters?

Say it like you mean it

    You jokingly reply.

    Is true love fading

    Because we didn’t kiss goodbye?

Say it like you mean it

    You snidely say.

    Is true love fading

Because I didn’t call all day?

Say it like you mean it

    You angrily shout.

    Is true love fading

Because we need to air it out?

Say it like you mean it

    You desperately cry.

    Is true love fading

Because I admitted to a lie?

***This poem does not reflect my marriage,

but is just an observation on how people can say,

“I love you” and their mate will reply, “I love you, too”

out of habit or without true meaning.***

    Randomness of Settling In

I still have lots of pictures left to hang. Hubby did hang the two huge paintings already though.

But I always feel at home once my books are unpacked.   Our friends always complain at moving time because heavy box after heavy box is labeled books.  J Here are just a few…

    house 008

As a housewarming present, my mother in law bought us an outdoor fireplace for the patio.  Hubby has been chopping wood and the boys have been stacking it in anticipation of a fire on a cool night.

I saw this little sign in Gatlinburg this last spring.  My Granny had one hanging in her kitchen when I was a little girl.  I can remember looking at it trying to sound it out.  This is the only thing I bought for myself while we were there.  Now my kitchen is not complete without it.

Now you can see why Sissy asked if we would EVER be able to park the cars in the garage! LOL! All it needs is a little organizing, right???

To the left are my hens and chicks and to the right are the ones that were left here.  Mine sure look pathetic.

I was so eager to get my kitchen organized so I could cook for my family that when I ran out of shelf paper I just wiped the cabinets down and thought I would worry about shelf paper later.  My in laws brought over more shelf paper and this will be one of my first projects when the last of the boxes are unpacked.

By the way, I’m not getting the “Mother of The Year” award.  Last night I told the kids much to their disappointment that we were out of salsa.  When I went to the store today I bought two jars so that we would have enough to last until the next grocery run.  Once I got back home I found a jar in the cabinet so now we have THREE jars of salsa! Should I tell the kids? J

Where do you keep your onions? Maybe I am just worn out from the move and colds, but this is really bothering me.  I lost the place I normally kept my onions and I just don’t know what to do with them in my new kitchen.  Obliviously, the center piece on the kitchen table is NOT the solution.

Tonight my parents came by.  My mom had baked a fresh apple pie and brought it over still hot.

My Dad helped Hubby chop wood.

We all took a turn pitching horseshoes. My Mom loves horseshoes.  Is that a Southern thing?

There really is no point, moral or anything specific I am trying to communicate tonight.  I guess just the random chaos of my life right now.

    Home and Health

We are all moved in! I still have pictures to hang and approximately 5 boxes of papers, filling, office, craft, and school supplies to unpack.  My closet still needs some work and Sissy asked the other day if we would EVER be able to park the cars the garage.  J But it is moving along nicely. We hope to have the other house ready to rent by the end of September and already have several interested renters just from word of mouth.

The kids are enjoying the big yard and have already made friends with the children whose backyard adjoins ours.  I do miss the creek at the old house, but the room to breathe and my new view more than make up for the lost creek.

     Barn 003

I hope to get pictures of our new neighbor’s barn during all four seasons.

    Barn 001

Hubby is already chopping wood and we are looking forward to our first fire in the fireplace!

We have all been under the weather since moving.  The boys stayed home from school today sick and Sissy gave us such a scare last week that we had to take her to the emergency room at 3am. She is fine now.

My hubby heard Sissy in her room choking and gasping for air.  When he got in there she was very white and breathing very shallow.  He made sure her mouth was clear and was performing the Heimlich by the time I got in there.  Her color and breathing improved, but she was limp and unresponsive.  She starting whimpering and whining and gave jerky movements in response to our commands.  She tried to talk to us, but her speech was so slurred that we could not understand her.  She could not walk, but we got her to the bathroom and she spit up a large amount of drainage that evidently was the cause of her choking.  I tried to give her a drink, but she drooled it all down her front.

By the time we got her to the emergency room she had improved as if nothing has happened and told us on the way there that she had a bad dream. Both the doctor’s and us believe she had a reaction to some over the counter cold medicine we had given her at bedtime in combination with her already being worn out.

I was very scared at the time of the episode, but I want to give praise to God that Sissy started improving as my Hubby sat on the floor holding her and I started praying over her.  After this incident, I realized that I have really taken the good health of my children for granted. Praise God for each and every day that we have together as a family and Praise God for our healthy bodies!

    Save Your Boxes

It looks like I am buying a house! I just wanted to take a quick moment to update you on the house I mentioned in my last post.  We should be signing paperwork this week or early next week. Praise God for all the details He has taken care of and His wonderful provision for my family!

Please keep my family in your prayers that this process will be smooth as we move forward with this phase of our lives.  Please pray specifically that we will be able to rent our current home fairly quickly and that God will direct the right applicants our way.

I know I have a few unreturned messages and emails, but please understand my limited computer time these next few weeks.

Here’s a quick peek… (Of course my Hubby will change the landscaping) LOL!
