Memorial Day

I wonder if this day

is different than before?

Is this day the same

now that you’ve been through war?

You don’t honor some soldier,

but a friend.

You don’t remember some Patriot,

but your next of kin.

The war you remember

is not a history lesson,

but a recent memory you

are still addressing.

Today I thought, I paused,

I wondered about you.

Not a nameless face,

but a person you knew.

How ignorant I am

to think it is not,

how pathetic of me

and all who forgot.
